About the Africa Communications Manager

The Africa Communications Manager leads on all regional communications work. This includes developing and implementing strategic regional traditional communications plans for specific campaigns and regional events, developing regionally relevant traditional media materials, such as press releases, op-eds, and media packages, and identifying media opportunities as well as relevant media contacts, cultivate relationships with regional journalists, and further develop and maintain media contacts lists. 

The Africa Communications Manager will manage and implement day-to-day communications work of the team while collaborating departmentally and interdepartmentally to ensure alignment between 350.org’s global, regional, and cross-regional communications.

The role reports to the Africa Regional Director and is part of the Africa Regional Team, and 350.org’s Global Communications Team.

Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure smooth flow of information between global communications and regional team, with a view to:
    • Identify opportunities for amplification of regional content globally
    •  Amplify cross-regional and global moments regionally.
    •  Adapt global messaging and products to regional context
  • Provide input into regional campaign and programme/project strategies from a communications angle.
  • Regular media analysis for key regional campaigns and priority moments
  • Outline of quarterly and yearly work plan for regional communications work and how it connects to departmental goals and success indicators 
  • Maintaining and ensuring flow of information and alignment between programme and communications strategies both regionally and in key priority countries 
  • Managing media relations with reporters and other relevant partners 

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of relevant technical work experience,  including developing and implementing communications campaigns for change, such as petitions, social media actions, mobilisations, or creative online disruption tactics, and managing supporter communities (such as large mailing lists, online groups, subscribers, social media followers, online activist spaces) in a non-profit or political context.
  • Proficient in Google Suite, Meltwater, Salesforce, Falcon, Slack, and Zoom or similar systems
  • Working knowledge of and keen interest in the current global debates on climate change, energy, and climate justice
  • Experience in managing projects as well as coordinating multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience working in an international setting, across countries, regions and cultures, in a distributed, multicultural team, where work happens online and across different time zones.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences 

  • Excellent written and spoken French (strong advantage)
  • Strong working knowledge of traditional and social media 
  • Experience working remotely, ideally in an international context
  • Experience working in nongovernmental organization or nonprofit sector
  • Experience and competency working in multicultural groups
  • Experience working with marginalized communities deeply affected by climate change and fossil fuels, such as indigenous communities on the front lines of fighting the extractive industry.
