About the role
The Systems Engineering team is responsible for ensuring that we deliver best-in-class hardware products. As a member of the group, you will be involved in all aspects of the product development process, from the initial ideation and requirements generation to prototyping to launch. Systems engineers develop instrument architectures, build and run system-level models, and design & implement custom hardware systems and associated metrology and testing approaches. You will work closely with hardware engineers including mechanical, electrical, optical and fluidic groups and collaborate cross-functionally with software, chemistry and computational biology teams.
Ideal candidates will thrive in demanding multidisciplinary environments, enjoy working at the seams of different engineering and science disciplines, and have strong data analysis and presentation skills. They will be excited to expand their knowledge in new fields and applications, building on their core background. As a senior member of the team, you will help set the high standards of our technical development processes.
What you will be doing
- Define and optimize complex system architecture, driving key performance, cost, and reliability trade-off decisions, working closely with mechanical, electrical, optical and chemistry design teams.
- Lead or contribute to instrument design for sensing & telemetry solutions, user experience and instrument workflow, collaborating closely with teams designing instrument consumables
- Develop documentation related to instrument architecture, theory of operations, workflows, requirements, and risk management (e.g., FMEAs)
- Lead cross-functional root-cause analysis for complex issues involving hardware, software, and chemistry interactions
- Develop and execute system-level tests, oversee subsystem-level testing to verify design conformity with performance and reliability requirements
To be successful, you will need
- Bachelors in an engineering or science discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Physics, etc); Masters preferred
- 5+ years of industry experience (in a design, test and/or systems engineering role), including contributing to at least one product launch
- Hands on experience with electromechanical and/or optomechanical system design, assembly, and testing
- Proficiency in Python, with experience in modeling, data analysis, and/or hardware control.
Additionally
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Excellent visual & oral communication and presentation skills
- Ability to pick up new technologies quickly
- Self-motivated; able to work independently in a fast paced, dynamic environment
Nice to have skills & background
- Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD tools (e.g., OnShape, Creo, etc)
- Working knowledge of production manufacturing techniques used in biotech instruments and consumables or similar hardware products
- Specific experience in life sciences / laboratory instrumentation product development
- Technical proficiency in one or more of the following disciplines: optics, fluidics, precision motion, embedded electronics
- Experience developing and/or testing products in a regulated environment (e.g., ISO 13485, minimally ISO 9001)
