About the role:
10x is seeking an outstanding individual to join its growing Automation team. The ideal candidate will have a strong product development background and experience working with leading liquid handling robots. As a member of the broader Hardware Engineering group, you will work alongside biology, engineering, and software teams to create robust robotic-based processes of current and future 10x-based assays. You will perform and drive feature development, verification, process transfer activities, interface with key stakeholders, and ensure routine instrument operations.
You must be highly motivated, with exceptional attention to detail, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and communicate effectively. You must be able to work both independently and as a part of a multi‐disciplinary team. Additional consideration will be given to individuals who contributed to the successful launch of customer-facing automation products.
What you will be doing:

- Designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and verifying assays on liquid handling automation platforms
- Working with internal stakeholders to develop engineering solutions that meet product needs across hardware, software and assay groups
- Develop and implement testing protocols for robotic systems to ensure compliance with product specifications
- Serve as the responsible individual for equipment and responding to issues with automation systems and equipment in the laboratory (troubleshooting, repairing, and requalifying).
- Collaborate with assay development, software, hardware, systems engineers, as well as external vendors to develop integrated solutions.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Molecular Biology or other biotech related field
- 3+ years of experience programming control commands for liquid handling robotic systems (e.g. Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman-Coulter, Agilent, or similar)
- Design, develop, and test liquid handling automation systems and components in a fast paced dynamic environment.
- Program and optimize custom as well as off-the-shelf liquid handling systems for precision dispensing, mixing, and handling of liquids.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C#.
- Strong understanding of good laboratory practices and documentation. Experience with version-controlled processes is a plus (GIT).
- Comfortable disassembling and reassembling complex instruments.
- Desire to be part of a rapidly evolving organization, with compelling technology, and taking products and processes to the next level
- Ability to work independently and as part of a project team
- Experience in design of experiment, execution, data analysis and presentation.
- Strong communication, problem solving and analytical skills.
Additionally, we’d like to see (nice to have):
- Experience developing cassette or slide based automated workflows
- Experience with NGS library preparation/nucleic acid methods and troubleshooting
- Experience in the analysis and interpretation of complex data sets
- Demonstrated ability to create and implement complex multi‐step assay schemes
- Experience with automating biotech fluid dispense systems, pumps, balances, and pipettors
- Experience successfully integrating 3rd party devices into robotic liquid handling systems
- Experience producing documentation for process validation and standardized operating procedures
- Strong preference for experience with scaling up from prototype to production ready systems.
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping (e.g., 3D printing).
