Please note this is a hybrid position and requires you to work from our Vancouver studio for part of the work week. This is not a remote opportunity.
Are you a Look Development/Shading Artist interested in working with us on our upcoming feature animation projects in our Vancouver studio?
What you’ll get to do:
- Interpret 2D designs, reference material and artistic direction and translate them into 3D textures and surfaces while maintaining the original artistic intent
- Create high quality stylized textures, either hand painted or procedural, to a level of detail necessary for production assets
- Create stylized but physically plausible shading and look dev
- Be across all areas that encompass texture painting, procedural texturing, shading and look dev, grooming, UV layout and sculpting
- Assume responsibility for ensuring assigned work is produced to an appropriate standard of quality within the scheduled timeframe and deadline
- Maintain good communication with the Surfacing Lead
- Help establish and maintain a consistent look for the project
What you bring:
- A passion and an eye for making beautiful looking CG objects, environments and creatures
- 3+ years’ experience working on high quality shading, surfacing and texturing
- 3+ years’ experience in animated features, features films (VFX) or high end episodics
- Proficiency with Maya and Mari
- An understanding of lighting and colour theory
- Good understanding of industry standards, conventions, and formats to enable successful completion of work
- Proven technical and visual skills with an understanding of art and design within an animation environment
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to abstract and interpret design down to its fundamentals
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Extensive knowledge of shader creation and implementation will be considered a bonus, as will experience using Houdini

The base wage range for this position is $33.65 - $62.50 per hour. The wage offered for this role will be commensurate with, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skills, years of experience, relevant education, and other applicable qualifications related to the role. The wage offered is based on a 40-hour work week and is not inclusive on Animal Logic's extended benefits package, long-term incentives, bonuses, overtime pay or other components that may be applicable to the total compensation package for this role.
